Bob Shaut began the band in 1986 as a vehicle to compose and arrange for saxophone quartet and rhythm section, and soon began performing concerts at schools, jazz festivals, clubs, weddings and swing dance parties. The band is back and better than ever, having released its first CD, "The Saxophone and the Drum" with music composed by Bob Shaut. Performances will also feature music by Duke Ellington, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk, and others; as well as selections from the great American songbook. Current members include Bob on alto and soprano, Dan on alto and tenor, Jim Perry on tenor, Ed Xiques on bari, Charlie Kniceley on bass, and Jeff "Siege" Siegel on drums.

Napoli/Shaut Sextet at ArtBar Gallery
Sunday October 9 @ 5 PM
The Napoli-Shaut Sextet is a jazz group you won’t want to miss! This band – made up of only six players – will surprise you with the fortitude of their sound. Their repertoire is made up of familiar jazz standards arranged in ways you’ve never heard them before – ballads become up-tempo jazz waltzes, melodies are morphed and transformed through the addition of new harmonies. While these arrangements provide the framework for Napoli-Shaut Sextet performances, perhaps the most impressive aspect of their performances are the musical conversations created through seemingly effortless improvisation.
The Napoli-Shaut Sextet features:
Tristen Napoli | Trumpet
Bob Shaut | Alto & Soprano Saxophones
Dan Shaut | Tenor Saxophone
Matt Finck | Guitar
Rich Syracuse | Bass
Jeff Siegel | Drums
Tristen Napoli, a native of Kingston, now makes his home in New York City where he is known as a versatile jazz trumpeter. He regularly performs in and around NYC in such venues as Birdland, Minton’s and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Tristen has toured and recorded with many notable Jazz artists including the Artie Shaw Orchestra and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.

Bob Shaut is a Hudson Valley native who was a music educator for 39 years in Poughkeepsie and Kingston. Never relenting on his ambition to play saxophone and compose , he has been an active performer and band leader for that entire time. Now retired from teaching, he began collaborating with Charlie Kniceley, a 30 year member of Bob's flagship group Sax Life. Their partnership was originally a duet, simply bass and sax, but it soon became evident that another voice was needed. That's when they approached Chris Bowman to play drums. Charlie had worked with Chris since 2004, recording and performing with Mr. Rusty, a fusion group lead by Danish guitaritst Nat Russell. After Chris joined with Bob and Charlie, the new trio proved to be the right thing to do. Chris is from North Carolina and Charlie is from Ohio, so although they have lived in the Hudson Valley for many decades, the different parts of the country come together in the music.

CD Release
It is the sound, the versatility, the range of the voices; it is the drive, the cymbal textures, the tribalism of the toms; tied together with the bass strings, it is the saxophone and the drum.
"For many years musicians and audiences have encouraged me to record Sax Life. Retirement and a grown-up family finally gave me the opportunity to record. Old compositions were tweaked and a few new ones were written. The effort and musicianship of Jim, Dan, Ed, Charlie, Jeff and Scott was a pleasure to be a part of."
