hvJAZZ 2018-2019 Season
We are excited to announce the second season of hvJAZZ at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge. hvJAZZ presented two ensembles in partnership with SUNY Ulster this past year. Students in the advanced Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra and the intermediate hvJAZZ Lab Band were able to produce a professional recording with Blues Hall of Fame musician - Professor Louie. This CD will be coming out in September of 2018. Students, alongside members of the SUNY Ulster Jazz Ensemble ,were able to perform with guest artist Jim Snidero as well as present a series of high quality performances throughout the year.

Cabaret Performance
November 3, 2018
Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra and SUNY Ulster Jazz are the opening act for the annual Swinging Moments Cabaret: A Benefit for the Alzheimer's Association.
Featuring professional musicians, dancers and vocalists, this event hosted by the Shaut family has raised over $60,000!

Essentially Ellington
2018-2010
HVYJO will participate in Jazz @ Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington program. The nation's most elite High School jazz competition. Students will record three tunes for adjudication and participate in one of the regional festivals hosted by JALC.

HVYJO w/ Steven Feifke
January 26, 2018
Students will perform alongside jazz pianist and composer, Steven Feifke, as we continue our collaboration with the Catskill Jazz Factory.
The residency will conclude with a performance at the Hudson Valley's best jazz club - The Falcon.

Last season hvJAZZ/SUNY Ulster was able to create a CD with Blues Hall of musician - Professor Louie. The CD is available at all our performances our at our website.

hvJAZZ/SUNY Ulster
2018-2019
hvJAZZ and SUNY Ulster perform on SUNY Ulster's Music Department's concert series. Come hear the students perform alongside the gifted college students and talented community members at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge.

Weekly rehearsals will be Tuesday evenings at SUNY Ulster. The advanced group (Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra) will rehearse from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. The first rehearsal will be September, 11. .....The intermediate group (hvJAZZ Lab) will rehearse Tuesdays from 7:00 pm-8:15 PM. and will begin on September 25.
the hvJAZZ ensembles
Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra - tuition $225 per semester ($400 per year. $50 savings)
Students grades 8-12 and at a NYSSMA level 5 or 6 proficiency. Some to a great deal of experience performing jazz. Willingness and interest to begin and develop improvisation. (Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums and Piano) This is the premiere jazz ensemble of hvJAZZ. Rehearsals: Tuesdays from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at SUNY Ulster. First rehearsal: September 11 2018.
hvJAZZ Lab - tuition $175 per semester ($300 per year. $50 savings)
Students grade 6 and up and at a NYSSMA level 2 - 4 proficiency. No experience performing jazz necessary. Willingness to step out of musical comfort zone is necessary. Rehearsals: Tuesdays from 7;15 pm to 8:15 pm at SUNY Ulster. First rehearsal: September 25, 2018.
hvJAZZ Youth Vocal Ensemble
We are seeking students interested in performing in a vocal jazz ensemble. Students do not need to have any experience singing jazz. Due to the success of the summer 2018 program we would like to expand into the school year. Please contact us if interested.
hvJAZZ Youth Studio Orchestra
This intermediate-advanced level group is open to students who play; violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, french horns, tuba, guitar, piano, bass and drums. (Students should be proficient on a NYSSMA level 4 or higher.) No jazz experience necessary. This is a new ensemble and will not start in September. Please contact us if interested in the playing in the future.

hvJAZZ Directors
Dan Shaut
Saxophonist Dan Shaut received his master’s degree in saxophone performance at the University of Maryland in 2003 and his bachelor’s in music education at Ithaca College in 2001. He has studied with Steve Mauk, Steve Brown, Chris Vadala and Dale Underwood.
He has been on faculty as the saxophone and jazz instructor at Ithaca College’s Summer Music Academy for the past six years. He has recently acted in the same position at the Music Institute of Sullivan and Ulster (MISU)’s summer program. He has been guest conductor of the Dutchess County All-county band, and the Tompkins County All-county band, and a guest clinician for the Orange County Music Educators Association.

Bob Shaut
Bob Shaut co-founded the Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra with Richard Wixom in the early 2000s.
Bob has played professionally since being in high school. He has played saxophone, clarinet and flute in many shows in the Hudson Valley, and has performed several times with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. Some of the acts that he has performed with include: Andy Williams, the Temptations, Frankie Valli, Jerry Vale, Connie Francis, Eddie Fischer, the Four Tops, Engelbert Humperdinck, Phyllis Diller, Henny Youngman, Joan Rivers, Regis Philbin , and conducted for George Burns.
As a jazz artist, Bob has performed with many local musicians. Bands that he led are Mosaic, a 12 piece big band; a quintet that released an LP, “Shaut's Thoughts”; Sax Life, a sax quartet with rhythm section. Presently, Bob performs with Sax Life, CBC Trio, the Big Bang Big Band, and Shaut Swing Orchestra. See More
